The Marsh at Radke Regional Shoreline

For our third and final field assignment, I explored the Marshland at Radke Regional Shoreline in Martinez. From an abiotic standpoint, a handful of conditions were noted. The temperature was a mild 54*. There was a slight breeze of less than 5mph. Most of the sky had cloud cover. The humidity was 73%. The trail and surrounding air were moist. The biotic conditions consisted of plants such as marsh reeds and gum plants. Lastly, the wildlife spotted included a variety of birds including a...

IN-Naturalist Bibliography

I’ve realized that growing up, I was privileged to have access to many of these books. A lot of these are really special pieces and it’s unfortunate that more of them aren’t easily accessible in libraries. In my opinion, having access to high-quality reference material that is precisely tuned to a certain region (in my case, Indiana) is one of the best tools for anyone studying living things around them. The list is in chronological order of when I got them, roughly. This selection is bi...

Week 3 Challenges

Alright everyone, only two weeks left. You’ll notice that the challenges might be getting a little harder now. We hope it’ll encourage you to spend more time outdoors and explore the natural world!

Aquatic Challenge:
Don’t get phibbed! Post a picture of an amphibian or an animal with gills. Reminder: amphibians are any species of vertebrates that can live both on land and in water, who typically have aquatic larval stages followed by terrestrial lung-breathing adult stages. <...

Featured Photo(s) From Last Week

Hello friends! We’re knees deep into the BioBlitz, and we hope you’re having fun. We continue to appreciate all your submissions–another 1,000+ observations were uploaded just this past week! However, this made it especially difficult to find a singular featured photo, so we decided two photos would suffice. The first image is of a hooded skunk in Ohio, taken by martyndrabik. For the aquatic challenge, a photo featuring two hooded mergansers by diana768 claims the prize. Congratulations,...

"American gooseberry" cultivars explained

I occasionally see people upload observations of "American gooseberry" hybrid cultivars which can't be identified to species due to the fact that the binomial species concept doesn't apply to these individuals. In order to avoid having to type out the same explanation every single time, I'm making this journal post that I can link people to instead.

Most of the information below was gleaned from the following really nice PDF I found, but I adapted it to have a greater emphasis on...

In Awe, Inspired, and In Admiration

At the start of planning for this year's City Nature Challenge six months ago, our driving vision was for this event to be more inclusive at the community level, both geographically and demographically. In other words, we hoped for more people-diversity to complement the biodiversity of our county. Both deserve to be valued and championed, and citizen science is the perfect forum for accomplishing this.

By comparing the maps of last year's CNC observations with this year's, and b...

Why are infants of the pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) less cursorial than those of the common impala (Aepyceros melampus)?

The pronghorn (Antilocapridae: Antilocapra americana) is hypercursorial ().

Among bovids, the most cursorial species belong to the tribe Alcelaphini, which run with great speed and endurance. However, the pronghorn is more cursorial than any alcelaphin.

However, the pronghorn is anomalous in a certain way: its infants hide immobile for three weeks before they and their mothers resume their normal gregariousness.

For comparison, infants of the alcelaphins Connocha...

Fatsia japonica - growing outdoors

A fantastic and impressive example of Fatsia japonica (Araliaceae) (Japan and South Korea) observed growing outdoors (in the U.K.). Commonly known as the castor oil plant or fig leaf palm, it grows up to 4m in a decade. An evergreen shrub with 7-8 dicotyledonous splayed, leathery, palmately lobed leaves, and small white flowers in terminal compound umbels, it produces a beautiful cluster of ornamental, non-edible black berries. It grows well in moist and well-drained soils in partial sha...
