City Nature Challenge 2024 Results

The City Nature Challenge is officially over, and the results are in!

Thank you to all the participants who spent their weekend creating a snapshot of all the biodiversity in and around our city.

The Capital Region had 416 observers contribute 9,124 observations of 1,398 different species.

Our project showcased the wildflowers, birds, marine life, plants and animals in the capital region.

The top five plant species we found were:

  1. Pacific sanicle (Sanicula crassicaulis)
  2. Pacific Trillium (Trillium ovatum)
  3. Miner’s lettuce (Claytonia perfoliata)
  4. Common Douglas-Fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii)
  5. Shortspur Seablush (Plectritis congesta)

The top five bird species we found were:

  1. Canada goose (Branta canadensis)
  2. Mallard (Anas platyrhynchos)
  3. Bald Eagle (Haliaeetus leucocephalus)
  4. Savannah Sparrow (Passerculus sandwichensis)
  5. Least Sandpiper (Calidris minutilla)

The top five invasive/introduced species we found were:

  1. Red deadnettle (Lamium purpureum)
  2. Bur Parsley (Anthriscus caucalis)
  3. Scotch broom (Cytisus scoparius)
  4. Spanish bluebell (Hyacinthoides hispanica)
  5. Common daisy (Bellis perennis)
